The good old days...
... when no one tried to protect software ideas because there were always more where those came from. And pranks like making certain a competing application could not run were hilarious and widespread.

People always sentimentalize the lawless frontier once it has closed and civilization has become so reliable that it seems dull.

On the other hand, the people who had to live through times of cutthroat and sometimes mean-spirited competition probably would have described life as nasty, brutish, and short.

The Rockefellers and Gates build huge and powerful organizations... until law catches on and catches up.
