Have sympathy.
If you're a representative to the EU, your political career is over in your own country and you won't be able to obtain publicity without tawdry scandal.

Patents are an exception. They're EU business and people care.

The problem is, patents are necessary to the software industry, and the software industry is of increasing importance.

So the one thing that you cannot do on this issue is prevent software patents.

But if you simply acknowledged fact and economic necessity, the interest in what you did would go away. And you'd be back to spending your time debating what constitutes a comfortable bed for a pig.

So the debate will be dragged on and on and on. So long as it has not the slightest effect, the world will remain safe.

Though this measure may have a chance to pass. If it's sold as a simple guidance to bureaucrats.
