First step to replace is decouple
Note, if you are using any applications that don't use an RDBMS to manage data then replace them, they are using stone age technology.

Problem is there are alot of mission critical applications where the designers were "rightsized" 10 years ago. Say a company has a key program based on COBOL using VSAM. They might want to access the information because it is used by other down stream applications. By encapsulating the back end, they can built cool front ends which make the end user think the mainframe was retired. Overtime, they can build & test the replacement system using whatever technology makes the most sense because the bunsiness unit head is no longer breathing down their neck for the web based interface next week.

Of course, once its encapsulated they probaly will never re-implement the functionality using new technology because if they were willing to take the risk they would have simply done it from the start ... lol, who knows or cares, the business thinks its web based but its using the same old apps they wrote in the 60's.
