I still don't get it
"Its always a trade-off of structure vs. flexibility. " Not true, only if you take a program orientated approach. The data is structured in the database and then you can query and update it flexibly using a declarative data manipulation language. The structure, validation and integrity happen in the database at the design stage, then you have risk free flexibility.

This whole service orientated architecture stuff adds nothing new at all, only a means of describing and manipulating that is markedly less complete and less flexible than the relational model (ie XML).

You really need to read up on some relational fundamentals, then you might see why this service orientated approach is a step backwards and decisively NOT forwards.
