This is not as simple as it seems ...
Guess which of the two incompatible code streams will have the support of the kernel team AND the support of the deep pocketed business interests that are patrons of the Linux ecosystem? If the FSF chooses to go their own why with GPL3, they will be consigning themselves to the hobbyist market because business will not continue to support their projects. The resultant emerging mainstream Linux will continue to be based on GPL2 and a few necessary applications that go GPL3 will be forked to GPL2 to ensure their survival in the business market. This is purely a decision that Richard and his FSF cronies have to make. Are their ideals so important to them that they are willing to go off into a corner with their little clique and pout while the rest of the Linux ecosystems moves ahead into the future? So we are really not talking about two incompatible code streams here. We are talking about a dominant GPL2 codestream with an established embedded base and what amounts to a GPL3 fork. The GPL3 fork may survive, but there is no way it will flourish. Linus's business connections are the ONLY reason that Linux is even on the map today. After years of work, the FSF folks still haven't even been able to come up with a kernel. That in and of itself is a great revelation about the dysfunctional side of the FSF. If they choose to compromise, fine. If not, cut them loose. Linux will continue to thrive under the leadership of Linux and OSDL. OSDL has a huge commercial base of interested parties. Even MS keeps in touch with them. The FSF, on the other hand, is largely turning into a clique of anti-progress disgruntled old men and there cadre of young religiously motivated adherants. That mix does not bode well for their future.
