Why this is EXTREMELY important ...
IF GPL3 licensed software IN ANY WAY encumbers external NON GPL3 software, OSDL and the Linux community in general need to know that NOW. The reason, quite frankly, is that if they (FSF) try to overreach with this new version, ALL important projects that decide to move to GPL3 will simply need to forked in order to make sure that a current GPL2 version of the same program/application is maintained. This is especially important in terms of multimedia programs. OSDL has legitimate reason to want to know what, if any, external effects GPL3 will exert. Personally, I think that if FSF indeed trys to overreach on this (which wouldn't suprise me), they will be signing their death warrant. They will be ensuring that software licensed under GPL3 will be a pariah in the mainstream Linux community, and you can take that to the bank. Sure, they will continue to maintain their introverted little clique, but the growing edge of free software is moving in the other direction, and mark my words, the FSF will only succeed in (further) marginalizing themselves by being unreasonable.
