Phones
I hope you're asking about my personal phones, and not the CE phones from the article. If not, read no further.
I can only tell you about Vonage (my VOIP service). http://www.vonage.com/

They sent me an adapter, which is also a router, that attaches to my cable modem or my router (my choice). It can also hook into DSL lines, but I am a cable user. My home network is hooked into the adapter by Ethernet cable. The phone just plugs into the adapter with standard phone line. The phones themselves aren't VOIP phones, they are standard phones that I bought at BJ's. I can't give you the model number right now, but they are Motorolas. They're cordless, support caller ID, and expandable to 4 handsets.

As far as actual usage goes, it's pretty good. The voice quality is about the same as on the PSTN. I can use the phone and frag people in UT2K4 at the same time without a hiccup. Once in a while, maybe once every 2 weeks, I have to reset the adapter in order for my service to work properly. Switching was pretty simple, although SBC dragged their feet about allowing my number to move to Vonage.

If you're thinking about switching, here are some pros & cons for the Vonage service :
pro - Flat rate for all my calling anywhere in the USA. Currently Canada is also included.
pro - Can use my standard phones.
pro - Lots of features like voicemail, call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding.
pro - dailing 911 works - but I had to set it up.
pro - When I move, my number will folow me.
con - If my cable goes out, so do my phones.
con - If I lose power, I lose my phones (unless I keep the UPS on)
con - I have to use 11-digit dialing even for local calls. Minor, but annoying.
con - For no reason I can see, my adapter needs to be reset every couple weeks or so.
