will be studied and how the study will be done. Microsoft will of course know in advance what about what the outcome will be and only fund things that will look favorable.

They aren't going to fund a report that is highly likely not to go their way. That doesn't mean, however, they control the research process. IDC is a fairly respected research company, and releasing a blatantly biased report would not be good for their bottom line...so they wouldn't do it.

And, they also have the right of NOT releasing the report if it does not turn out the way they wanted.

Granted, but they DID release it. Doesn't mean the report was biased.

That said, MS had their head up their arse here. Needing another 50,000 people to take care of Vista is NOT a good thing.

That's not exactly the message of the report. ANY important new release requires people to do new development work, nursemaid the conversion process. That applies whether the operating system is Windows, Mac OS X or Linux.
