Microsoft Stock is up owing to increase dividends: not Vista
Vista could be 10 times better than XP and it still isn't going to change the fact that computing is mobile now and all the phone/computers are Linux. Nor is it going to change the fundamental change in hardware owing to multicore multiprocessing devices of which those phones are just the first.

When did IDC do this work? Did they make assumptions regarding an X86 single processor world? That assumption has proven to be a bad one. It is the assumption that invalidates the study.
