marketing gimmick
I was almost convinced of the appeal of that line of reasoning when I realized that although Microsoft does initially rely on its technet guys to give them the most detailed and immediately useful feedback they still need those 5 mil or so of the vast unwashed masses because its those poor fools who couldn't troubleshoot their way out of a paper bag... and ultimately it is on the user experience of these boobs that Vista will pass or fail. They must make it as granny proof as possible and you cant get that kind of feedback from people who know too much.
