PDF reDirect may be the solution
PDF reDirect is a great alternative for creating .pdf files from just about any Windows program (not just MS). It installs as a printer driver. When selected as your printer, it creates a *.pdf in the folder you select, rather than sending it to a printer for a paper printout.

The basic version is free. It has served my needs for over a year. The "Pro" version costs a whopping $20, and adds more encryption, more batch processing tools, and much more. I will readily buy it as soon as I need a feature not included in the free version, but that has not happened yet. Comparision info is available at www.exp-systems.com/PDFreDirect/Features.htm?2.

Unless I have missed something, it doesn't work backwards. In other words, you can't download someone elses *.pdf and edit it in Word, WordPerfect, etc.

For me, it has made a save-as PDF feature in some future version of Office meaningless.
