RIAA
The RIAA is actually an industry mouthpiece. They don't put up the money for recording etc. There is a tremendous threat to the way the industry does business. And as I see it from the perspective of playing and performing professionally and less for the last 25 years is this;
1) With the introduction of the PC/ Mac or whatever, there are some very talented people out there doing work available on the web that equals what the big studios can do. I have resently purchased online two great albums that were self financed and distributed by major known acts, for 9.99 and 12.99 respectively.
2) With the major labels not doing back catalogue pressings, the only way to find these is to dig through vinyl bins or find them on line that have been ripped from vinyl to the digital medium.
3)The typical "deal" goes as such. You get say 150,000 advance, plus studio costs, pr costs etc.
But you have to pay it back. And 8 cents per cd sold is roughly the norm on new deals. Out of that, they get a percentage to pay back the up front costs. so it works to further keep the musicians slaves to the labels. They drop you, you still owe. Tours, unless self financed also pay into this.
4)About the time the grunge thing happened, there was a major decline in good music being signed that continues today. The labels ran around with blinders signing everyone who sounded like say Nirvana. But the cream always rises. On the bright side with the interest in the 60-70's styles, there is hope. There have been some really great stuff starting to pop up.
5)Most of the kids that I talk to always want to know about the bands I listened to and are downloading those bands for the reason laid out above, no rack catalogue in print.

While I think that the idea of downloading music is wrong, the AR people who sign the next big thing are misguided and out of touch. Give us something we would want to buy and we'll be there.

By the way, if there is a suit to be settled, just tell me the artist to make the check out to.
