Motive is always money
If the music industry doesn't have to maintain hardware in the numbers they currently do, that means more profit. Production and warehousing are the biggest costs (far higher than artist royalties, by the way). Make the music available in the methods I outlined and the profits increase. It sure beats having to suck up all the unsold copies of Lance Bass' latest "album."

The recording industry is wrong because it refuses to adapt. Morality is just a bonus...
