- Change the out-of-date people
-
Not only is the model out of date, but so are the people making the rules. You are talking people that have been making rules since the 78 was the standard. These are people who honestly do not have a clue as to what technology is available, so they rely on a seriously biased interest group to tell them (not unlike a fox telling you the best way to protect the hen house).
Why is there a need to distribute 5 million hard copies of a CD anymore? A large number of people have on-line and burn capability (CD-RW/DVD-RW drives are standard now in new systems). One can also go to several services and create a custom compilation CD mix for purchasing. The big warehouse stores have the capability to set up burn-for-pay kiosks for those not willing to download. Carrying a folder full of plastic disks is not the norm.
At home, I can use my DVD player to listen to my old CDs and my ripped MP3, so I don't need the extra hardware. Right now my car has an old-fashioned cassette player, but that is being replaced next year with an MP3-capable CD player. My daughter is not allowed to take her original CDs she gets as gifts out of the house. I copy them as audio or MP3 CDs. MP3 CD players are under $40 now and I can put ten of her CDs on one disk that I can replace if it get messed up.
You tell me why we should all be forced to buy something extra to carry around. Technology has evolved, but the industry is still thinking of those old 78's.
Speaking of which, I happen to like Sophie Tucker. You may not think this is important until you realize that the "Mickey Mouse" copyright extension law will keep all Sophie's post-1928 material locked up. Whoever holds those copyrights can horde the recordings until the original acetates melt and there is nothing to hear. Right now, you really have to dig to find an old 78 of her because there aren't any CDs being released. Not profitable, you see... - Posted by: AbsolutelyNot Posted on: 03/30/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
