RE: "think, people..."
I agree with what you are mostly saying, with exceptions in relation to the article.

1) Where do these people come up with these numbers about how much they are losing to piracy? The only way they can come up with real numbers is to be connected with every person pirating software and the know how many copies they are pirating. So if they are saying that they know all these people and how many copies they are pirating than they should be arresting them all, afterall they would know where they all are.

2) I think software companies shouldn't be complaining so badly about pirating, first off it's not like people are walking out of stores with their software boxes (mechandise) like the retail industry faces with clothing and the such.

3) Software industry is beginning to price themselves out of the industry. You can get a slow PC for about $360 (including monitor). But by the time you add windows, office and a another program or two, you gone from $360 to about $800-1200. That's like buying a $10,000 car and paying $20,000 to fill it up with gas. It makes no sense.

4) I personally think that software companies should insitute a pay for only what you want software packages not pre-bundled. A perfect example is buying MS Office, most people i know how no use for Excel, Outlook, but they do like Word, Power Point and Publisher. You can buy individually from another from $120 for the upgrade or up to $230 each program. A small business edition costs $399, or close to the cost of buying 2 programs seperately.

""OK, the software industry is not hurting because they build the costs of piracy into the price of the software. Employees get paid, Adobe and Microsoft are making handsome profits, so who really loses because of piracy? Buyers. Products are priced based on how many units are actually sold, not used. Any money collected from cases like this ought to be rebated to customers who paid based on the anticipated losses associated with piracy. Based on this, software makers have made their own reparations. No need to pay back Microsoft for what is already built into it's price structure. It would be like paying them twice for the same work.

They're always telling us "theft hurts consumers" so we paying customers would therefore also deserve the reparations if a thief gives back what was lost.

As for the sentence, he and Ken Lay could've been roommates -- they're both con-men. What's good for the goose...
