How long you been using computers?
Check out the history ... Sun has given quite alot of technology to the industry. OK, so they usually insist on licenses rather than "give" but if you look closely at reality you will see that Sun has been an advocate of open systems since the start - in fact, Sun is usaully credited with creating the open systems movement.

Prior to the Sun 1, everything was closed and single vendor ... Sun made its business off of providing developers a platform they could use to build other products ... even IBM, Apple, and Microsoft standardised on Sun internally for their product development because they could move the work off Sun with fewer barriers than any other alternative.

Alot of techies don't seem to realize Sun enabled the hetrogenous computing market by being the first to build a business off of TCP/IP based "desktops" which connected to "servers".

Forget about the battles ofer protocols, lanuguages, API's and VMs. The reason MS was given a chance to consolidate the industry is because the HW manufacturers feared Sun's ability to commoditize products. They viewed MS as benign because they did not make HW.

MS's problem is all the "partners" who helped them get to where they are are now sharing the cost of building out Sun's open systems vision as a means of controlling MS's arrogance.
