Ummm ... acually, no it isn't.
This cross platform stuff is a red herring for enterprise applications (Intranets just need a browser).

That is an MS marketing statement if I have ever heard one. Here's a weird little trend that I am seeing ...

I design open systems, and I attempt to keep them as open as possible. Right now, I am doing a lot of VS.Net work (I'll admit that) ... but every one of my clients moan and scream about what a cruddy product XP is by comparison to Win2K, and how they are sick and tired of MS licensing, and how much of the budget is wasted in applying tons of patches, etc.

And yet, suggesting the development of an application that can be migrated to other systems seems to spin their heads. They want to develop systems that don't tie them to one platform ... but since the Jones' down the street are writing apps targeted for the Windows platform, so they will to. Nobody really innovates anymore, nomatter who you are.

Microsoft's goal is to convince the world that there is ONLY one platform ... Windows. All of the connections to other platforms are simply there for you to support your "legacy" applications -- but slowly, you end up getting prodded to move in a more Microsoft centric direction.

And yes, I agree that the question of platform is less of an issue with the browser on the desktops. However, large enterprises at which I have worked literally have hundreds of web servers -- you still have to make hard decisions about platform. It's not completely transparent.

Although most companies seem to be writing Windows specific apps, I am hearing more and more from customers who are dis-satisfied with Windows. So, knowing how to develop things cross platform is a smart move, in my opinion. Not only does it give tech folks the freedom to pick the best option, but it also allows you to easily move to other platforms when situations change. And that's one degree of separation ... :o)
