Cross platform is more than two tier model ...

..Single client requires a homogenous environment...

That's why you might have to build multiple clients.
The same applies to Java unless you build a single client with the lowest common capabilities, a cell phone maybe?

Not true.
MS have built a host of middle tier technologies, Host Integration Server talks to all your legacy IBM fo example.
Native Oracle,MySQL drivers for .Net
Java do web services as does .Net - interop.
Biztalk, commerce and content servers etc.

..Sure they can provide an optimized pet store using .NET, but what about a multi-national bank which has only one viable choice - J2EE?...

Remember, there are exactly 1000 corporations that make up the Fortune 1000.
MS targets the remaining millions.

Throw in some JS and DHTML and you've got a very compelling client.

Have to disagree.
Even old ASP is alive and kicking (VB, COM and ADO) but has been replaced with the must supperior .Net Framework.
