Oportunity Cost = 4 hours
It took me 4 hours to load SUSE Linux in a Virtual Machine and that included loading VMware on top of Windows XP professional. I used none of the Unix commands long forgotton and Open Office was configured and ready for use.

When you do this - and you will or you will not be able to call yourself an IT professional Zork - you may be conserned by the followig license language :

"you may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the sofware on a single computer, shch as a workstation, terminal or other device (workstation computer). The software may not be used by more than 2 processors at any one time on a single computer"

That message comes when you start loading Windows XP professional in its own Virtual Machine. There is none of that nonsense with SUSE Linux. Microsoft in July gave businesses the ok to ignore that message completely.

Think about it.

If you can only have one version of Windows running you can not clone it. That blows chunks in a virtualized world and in effect means no business would be using Windows in about 4 months.

At least with virtualizaton you can get some performance from Windows OS products on the dual processor multicore machines. Contrary to popular belief, Windows on a multicore multiprocessor business computer will actually run slower than on last year's single CPU computers because the multi processors are clocked slower.

I had to get help to load the tools for Linux but the inital load without tools took really less than 4 hours and was no more of a problem than loading Windows XP. Real Networks player and sound, all that out of Suse Linux. I suspect Red Hat and others is the same meal deal.
