Microsoft wants compatibility...
... for third party software connected with Office because those applications are a reason to upgrade to the newest Office version.
Microsoft's network effect (wide usage attracting applications which in turn attract new sales) is an important form of sales.

So expect Microsoft to be helpful to thirs party software. Except competing office suites and ODF plug-ins, of course.
