U.S. trade deficit expands to record high
from: http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2004/03/12/business/UStrade_040312

WASHINGTON - The United States current account deficit grew to a record $541.8 billion US last year as imports of goods far outstripped exports, the Commerce Department said Friday.

The 2003 record was 12.7 per cent higher than the previous all-time high of $480.9 billion seen in 2002.

The current account figures are regarded as the broadest measure of a country's foreign trade position as its tracks goods, services, investment flows between countries and unilateral transfers, such as foreign aid.

The U.S. government said the deficit in goods ballooned to $549.4 billion US from $482.9 billion US in 2002. The U.S. ran a surplus in the services sector of $59.2 billion US, down from last year's $64.8 billion US.

The mushrooming trade deficit has become a political football in the U.S. election campaign.

Democrats charge that the free-trade position of President George W. Bush is causing U.S. jobs to disappear.

Bush recently took at shot at likely Democrat presidential nominee Senator John Kerry by speaking against economic isolationism.

Kerry has said he would put all trade deals under a 120-day review and require U.S. firms to give notice before they moved jobs out of the country.
