On the Road for SOA: CxO and Business Benefit Discussion
Hi David,
A very popular request that we get all the time is "We need tools and support to help articulate the value of SOA to the other parts of the business". In response to this, we worked with a number of other vendors to create a "SOA Maturity Model".

The model is designed to show the increasingly positive impact of SOA adoption from a business benefits perspective. It provides IT decision makers with simple framework for benchmarking the strategic value of their SOA implementation, and a model for visualizing future success.

In other words, The model is design to be a framework for discussion to help an organization understand the various levels of maturity of adopting SOA; to establish standards and best practicies for infrastructure, architecture, and governance; and to articulate the business value of getting to each level. This helps to create a common vocabulary and a common way of viewing your SOA adoption so that you can more effectively communicate across development teams, across departments, and with senior level executive management.

I have been explaining and using the model quite regularly in SOA discussions and find it people grasp it quite readily. It was quite rewarding yesterday at a meeting with a group of project leaders and enterprise architects yesterday at a company in Munich, when I was not quite yet finished explaining the model and they started immediately having a discussion amongst themselves and saying things like "we most of level 1, we have some of level 3, and about half of what we need for level 2....". It was great immediate feedback on the usefulness of having the model.
