The usual BS
Here is the problem I have with this entire concept.

1) the Wiki is a very bad example since, as reliance on it grows, the fact that highly suspect content can EASILY become part of the canon has become a real problem. "Free exchange" means no responsible body. It is up to "the community" to ensure the validity of the content. You have to hope that someone who is totally unpaid, and really has the correct knowledge, is dutifully updating the entries and not getting recorrected. This really doesnt make for a reliable source of truly mission critical information. For example, I'd prefer if my doctor wasnt culling medical knowledge from Wikipedia.

2) the consumers of content outweight the creators of content by about 1000x1. The web 2.0 model that everyone is so enamored with is really just proving that most people really dont have much of value to contribute. Blogs are the random musings of a million people. Podcasts are the same.

Its no surprise that even Lessig is forced to quote a sad example like 'music remixed with anime to make videos' That says it all. The REAL content there is the MUSIC and the ANIME. BOTH of which are created by paid professionals. Big deal that someone feels they need the freedom to remix it and create something MILDLY interesting. My fear is, in an environment where you really CANNOT profit from your work, who is going to put the MASSIVE time and effort required to create TRULY good product.

3) When will I see a lawyer arguing that THEIR work should be free? Lessig probably makes a nice deep six figure living as a professor at an Ivy league that milks $40,000 a year from parents. In return, he teaches kids that earning a living is morally wrong. Real nice. How much pro-bono work is he doing on the side? Does he get a speaking fee for that speech? Lets get real here. This is about special interests, lobbies and lawsuit money. The only difference between Lessig and the traditional media is they ADMIT its about money. They dont hide behind some false cloak of morality.
