Open Solaris has same destiny as Java ...
It will always be around but it will never really go anywhere. Its the same story as Java. The really exciting things are happening in the Linux world where entry level innovation is unfettered as the GPL opens the doors to the hobbyists and budding developers as well as the seasoned professionals who prefer to shun the dog eat dog proprietary approach. Open Solaris, like Java, doesn't really fit in either of these catagories. It is too controlled to excite open sourcers and too open to excite proprietary developers. Thus it will likely languish in a no mans land with relatively few contributors and only the big guns at Sun to keep it in the news and marketplace. Only time will tell if they can ever make this mutt hunt.
