Wrong focus....
It's nice for an open source project to have a wide base of contributors. But that's not the most important aspect to me. As both a developer and a user, it's more important that I can simply see the code (for trust...or debugging...or to modify it for my special needs). The fact that it was no written by a dispersed crowd from every corner of the planet is irrelevant to me compared to a) code visibility, an b) licensing that allows private non-commercial modifications. If I make modifications and intend to use them in a commercial product, I'd expect to have to contribute those back. And that would feed that tertiary aspect, which is outside contributions.
