It won't stop at check-out
Wether or not these tags are deactived at check-out is only part of the danger. It is in a companies best interest not to deactivate these tags. If the tags are left active the marketing implications are huge.

What happens when RFID is incorporated into our drivers lisence or ID cards? It's already planned for the U.K. The British government has already signed a contract with fujitsu to provide compulsory national ID cards with RFID tags to every British citizen.
