Because you didn't pay for it
"No other industry is able to get away with an "all care but no responsibility accepted" attitude, why do we accept it with software? "

You could always buy an IBM mainframe solution for a lot of money or a Unix server solution for less or a Windows server solution for even less money. There is a declining level of absolute guarantee of data integrity and availability as well and most people understand this.

If you want to hurricane-proof a house in Florida, you have to pay a lot more money to the builder than for a house where the roof is likely to come off in a mild hurricane. People here understand that and make the decision as to whether or not to pay for the protection. Lately, the government has stepped in with minimum code requirements and the prices have gone through the roof and the poorer folk have no roof to begin with.

You can't demand a million dollar guarantee on your ten dollar system.
