The real MS problem goes unaddressed
When is MS going to be forced to pay for the damage the its poorly written software has caused to countless users. No company has ever gotten by with selling dangerous products to the consumer. Especially when the danger is a result of negligence. How many readers have suffered from other products which were unsafe? This is no different. Anti trust is not what is hurting the consumer. If the consumer was given all the facts about why a virus was able to cost his company big dollars, holes in MS software that they bought in good faith, the consumer would take care of the anti trust issue through normal market forces. But when the IT press skirts the real issues, or does not tell all the known facts, or colors the truth by pointing to solutions that can't address the real problem, which again, is poorly written software with holes and design flaws which actaully makes it easier for malicious code to succeed in its attempts at damaging your IT environment, the consumer is prevented from knowing the truth. This is the biggest reason MS has a monopoly and the power that goes with it. If the consume had been told the truth about what was the cause of his out of control IT budget, forced to upgrade and then this upgrade left them with a seriously comprimised IT environment, no attacks are comming through the security system in place and therefore it is impossible to secure - there are holes in the code which allow access to the system processes which there are no security solutions available now or will there ever be that can even address a breach like this - he would not have suffered as much financial damage and MS would have been forced to fix the real problem because of basic economics. The fact that any external code can enter your OS at such a critical level shows the severe flaw in the design itself. Couple this with the poorly written software which opens the door to this level and you have an UNSECURABLE environment. For the press not to present this TRUTH to the consumer, they are more damaging to the consumer than MS. Without knowing the truth, the customer allowed MS to gain this monopoly. Those who are looking for alternatives to MS have discovered this in spite of irresponsible journalism. As more and more realize this, the IT press becomes less and less credible. I doubt many IT journalists have enough in depth experience in real IT to even recognize the real issue. For them to not understand the differene between a hole in security and a hole in an application or proccess and thinking some security utility can actually fix the hole in the code, it's obvious they don't have a clue about the very thing on which they are reporting. I've read all the uninforemed and misreported IT news I can stand. I wonder if MS has an investment in news.com!
