2000
I have been using it since 2000 for my desktop needs. Now I am using SuSE 9.0 Professional (eagerly awaiting 9.1!) and it's ready for the corporate desktop, with the exception of some legacy Microsoft specific software. But for e-mail, document and general spreadsheet creation and modification, Linux is ready and has been since 2003.

For the Mom and Pop home users that only do e-mail, shop at e-bay or browse the internet and play solitaire, and maybe store some digital images, Linux has been ready since 2002.

For the power users, hard core gamers and the folks that have really unique software requirements, I will concede at this time Linux is not ready for the desktop.

It all boils down to what do you need. And for the average Joe on a PC, Linux is enough to do the job, safely, securely and reliably. Ask my Grandmother, she has been using Linux since 2000 and other than the occassional call to come clean then dust from her PC (since she folows my instructions and never shuts down, she just turns the monitor off so the system runs 24/7) or to replace a failed piece of hardware (CPU cooling fan and power supply in the last 4 years) she has not had one problem, while all of her friends have been inundated with issues with their Microsoft machines. And yes I am her support, just like I support her friends and their Microsoft PC's. And many of her friends are starting to ask about Linux, based on her experiences and from what they see of her system. The youngest is 62 years old, so it goes to show that if you expose people to it, they can adapt. And if they see it in real life working next to the competition, they can make a decion based on their observations.

To the nay sayers, you have some valid points, but daily those points are diminished as the Open Source model moves forward and answers the challenge. But for the most part, your arguments are failing and hollow for the average everyday PC user.
