How does that help consumers?
By allowing for effective competition, that's how. Free market capitalism assumes that there is competition. When one vendor can eliminate competition by monopolizing the distribution channels, there no longer is effective competition. There is no other explanation for the state of the PC Operating Systems market unless you believe that Microsoft is the only organization on the planet capable of creating a mainstream consumer operating system in spite of the obvious economic incentive to do so! If they've got all these $billions in the bank for doing so, aren't all the other smart programmers, managers and marketing people incented to attempt to duplicate that success? What do you think has prevented that from happening?
