not quite ready
As much as I want to drop Windows, I can't after endless attempts at running various distro's I've only had luck with the Suse Live Eval CD. OFC it doesn't install much on my PC. It runs, but after awhile I miss just clicking an exe or a zip file and installing my software. Stable...hell yes...easy to use.....no no no no and no. If I wanted to go back to the days of the Dos command line I'd just load 6.22 back on my machine. As long as Linux has no easy way to run it without a phd in programming it will be a niche market tool.
Now to be honest I haven't been able to buy a copy of Lindows where I live (even Walmart Canada doesn't have it) But if its as disappointing as all the others I've tried....I'll have to wait another year or two to make the move. I run open office on my win98 boxes. Works good. I have Firebird, seems stable and quick...but so does Opera which I prefer. I am an above average user in that I have used multiple operating systems over the years. But even I can't in good conscience say to anyone OH yeah Linux rocks, cause clearly it does not. When it operates like Windows or OSX then and only then will the Linux community have something to crow about. Right now stability with horrid interfaces just doesn't cut it. I'd be happy if it came out of the box with KDE, and would run all linux installs and apps with a mouse click. BUT YOU KNOW THAT ISN"T GOING TO HAPPEN.......The geeks are so busy tripping all over themselves to not BE windows they are missing the majority of the market where LINUX would and could shine....Do I have hope for linux...yes, anytime soon? Well not unless IBM or one of the other big players mandates a quality standard interface. So in short, its stable, has apps...but isn't ready for Joe average.
