Windows is unstable and Linux has applications
I don't know where some of these people come
from. I support over 600 users, the majority on
Windows. My troubles are always on the Windows
side, applications crash (but they are pretty),
viruses infiltrate (Windows is easy to use),
security patches galore (Microsoft security).
MS Blaster caused so much downtime, but the
crazy people still say Windows is great, never
crashes, never has a problem... crazy!!!
I have several desktop Linux users, the only
problems I encounter are certain web pages
(poorly written code) don't work, or a Word
document comes in and it doesn't look right.
That is about it. On a stability scale of 1 to
10, Windows is a 4, Linux is a 9.

My wife needed MS Office for her classes (MS
specific instructions). I loaded XP on her
system that has never locked up or fatally
crashed in over a year running Linux (Mandrake).

XP didn't find the wireless adapter. I had to
use 'sneaker net' to burn a cd on my Linux box
and walk it back to XP to get it on-line. We
used it for a day (half of which was used to
patch, load drivers and load applications). The
next morning my wife called me and said the
machine locked up, I had her reboot and 4 hours
later it locked again. She lost the document she
was working on (no tmp or anything, all eaten by
M$). I came home, installed MDK 9.2 over XP
which took 30 minutes. All hardware was found
and worked without any of my time. Loaded
crossover office and M$ Office 2K. The machine
has been on all week, hasn't crashed. The fonts
look great. Mplayer works perfectly, although I
prefer Ogle, which I will load this weekend.

XP isn't that stable, it is marginaly better the
Win2K, which isn't saying much.

OpenOffice has to be setup properly to look
pretty. StarOffice comes out-of-the-box pretty.

I read a comment that Konqueror was slow...
Konqueror is very fast, Mozilla is slower. IE
isn't faster than Konqueror, but IE is faster
than Mozilla. IE also comes with enhanced
secuity holes which Konqueror and Mozilla do
not.

I gave up on Windows in 2000. It is crap
compared to all other systems.
