- No applications !!!
-
I agree with the other posts here. I am getting sick of the linux world. Instead of creating a hundred thousand different distributins, that
differs only in the desktop wallpapers, or the name on start button, or at the best a few different ugly looking themes, what these companies should try to do is to create outstanding applications on Linux. Yes, there are
applications to do everything in linux. But all are buggy and crappy and stick to standards.
Some examples that I am concerned about:
1.Staroffice/Open Office: This is the featured word processing application on Linux. I brought up this app on my PC running redhat linux ! Hey it looks like an alien application on Linux. Ha ! The gui looks like Windows GUI. Ok, I was not dissatisfied, cos I thought then probably it will work as good as MS Word. I opened a blank doc and stareted typing. Yuck ! The font sucks. I pulled out and tried each and every font available in its font list. No decent looking fonts. And the document that I typed looked horrible. Also vertical line the cursor stands at an awkward position on the letter that we are typing. I installed some fonts going through a painful procedure of reading a bunch of articles on web, downloading, installing, tweaking the settings,
which took me more than an hour. But hey, they still dont appear in the word processor. When you get a standard OS distro, you expect a simple thing like a word processor to look good and work without trouble... But not on Linux.
2. No decent video players. Dont scream ... I know there is mplayer, xine etc etc. But they are not decent. I downloaded and installed the latest mplayer few days back. Tried to play an un-encrypted DVD. But I see some strange horizontal lines in the video. I searched on web to find out what the problem is. I realized that this is due to interlacing. The mplayer man page says I can use an option called vop pp=(I forgot; how can a user remember all these things to just play a dvd and watch a movie.). Anyway I typed this option on command line. It says option pp not available. Then I tried other options like telecine etc. etc. Nothing improved the video quality. And let me tell you, this DVD plays fine
with great quality on my windows 98 box with a 3 year old WinDVD software that I have.
3. No video editor software. I know there is MainActor. But it is again in beta stage and doesnt have many features that a normal windows video editor software supplies. And dont tell me about Kino. It sucks big time.
4. No decent browser.
Konqueror - too slow.
Mozilla firebird - crashes every two minutes.
And there are many others. But none of them render all web pages correctly.
Then what linux has ?
1. Two hundred thousand different text editors like kedit, hedit, gedit, fedit, emacs, gmacs ...
2. Thousands of thesmes none of which look decent.
3. Two different bloated GUIs, KDE.
I know what you linux geeks are going to tell me: If you dont like it, fix it. There are better ways that I can spend my time than to fix some broken stuff that are created by incompetent linux programmers. And to do my computer related works I have windows. An old version: windows - 98. Even that works better than the latest and greatest desktop linux distro.
Last word : I just visited the Xandros web page. What they advertise on their front page in big letters is "Xandros desktop can now run Office XP" !!! Why do I ever want to buy xandros desktop to run Office XP ? The best OS to run Microsoft Office XP is, no boubt - Microsoft Windows XP.
Why dont these idiots understand that. - Posted by: mbraincell@... Posted on: 10/29/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
