- Open Source VistA
-
The real story here is that any entreprenure can get the Veteran's Administration's open source code and that this open source project is thretening to Microsoft and the Gates Foundation, who must see HeathCare as the next battle ground to be exploited.
It is threatening on the name level (VistA is a trade mark owned by US tax payers). It is threatening on the office software level (I suspect open office is part of the VistAOffice package) and it is threatening because Harvard recognized its superiority and gave VistA developers an award, just this year.
There is absolutely no reason for Microsoft to be in this space when it has been addressed so well and so long by the folks at U Mass and the Veterans Administration and the US federal government.
Health Level 7 has long been the specification for data transfer between billing systems and diagnostic systems and MUMPS (the Massachusetts General Hospital Utility Multi-Programming System) is engrained in the industry. Its coupling with Java - and owing to that OpenDocument - makes VistA the award winner Bill Gates' and Ballmer's school, Harvard, believes it is. As a showcase for open source VistA shines.
Lets see some more reporting on this VistA, US government funded software development project, and lets speculate why Massachusetts specified Open Document format in its bids this year. Government fails when its foundation of information is continually reworked instead of being built upon. And damn it - you do not outsource the core function of government which has always been Information.
Lets try to see if Microsoft thuggary was behind the forced departure of several VA administrators and State of Massachusetts IT professionals who actually STAND UP to those who would have us believe there is need for corporate supplied rather than government created software.
Lets see if the Gates Foundation's requirement that grantees freely share Aids findings precludes the use of VistA in favor of a Microsoft or Microsoft Dynamics solutions. Lets engourage the Gates Foundation to reject notions that support the Microsoft monopoly. (yea thats going to happen) or lets work with Eliot to split up the Foundation just as he had hope would happen with Microsoft.
