Those companies destroyed themselves
Borland tried to re-invent themselves many times over and spent money like a drunken sailor. In the process they pissed off many developers. Ashton-Tate was bought by Borland and essentially ripped apart by them. Nantucket/Clipper didn't move into Windows until it was way too late, having been beaten by MS-VB and Powerbuilder. Lotus and Word Perfect were complacent, not competitive, and fiddled around while they lost marketshare to Microsoft. They also responded the to Windows 3.x explosion too slowly.

Microsoft benefited from self-destructive behavior of major competitors during the late 80's and early 90's.
