OS X is DarwinBSD.
Why don't you go and learn about all the differnet BSD distros for the X86? There is OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD (Yahoo.com runs FreeBSD, exclusively!).

But, what is she running, in school that she cannot run on Ubuntu? Everything for Mac that is FOSS, is available free on http://sourceforge.net .

Have you tried http://pclinuxos.com that is Mandriva based?
