Actually, the exact opposite it true
For the users, that is. The community and users of PostgreSQL are quite happy with the database. They provide tons of support, and write patches to both the code and the documentation.

Fact is, plenty of people make money USING PostgreSQL.

And there are a lot of companies who provide support. Command Prompt, SRA associates, RedHat, Sun, Greenplum, and many more I can't think of off the top of my head.

But those companies have been around a while and have established customer lists that they service.

Pervasive was a beginner, and didn't really get the kind of traction they thought they would.

I'll take BSD PostgreSQL over GPL MySQL anyday, and it's not the license that's the real issue for me.

It's the community support. People show up with the oddest, strangest, most befuddling problems on the pgsql lists, and they have an answer in <24 hours from one of the core developers or an experienced pgsql admin.

It's the most vibrant Open Source project I've ever used.
