The model is fine (look at Red Hat, MySQL, etc. as examples of companies that made it work). The problem is that Pervasive had a reduction in revenue of over 12% (http://www.pervasive.com/company/press/releases_show.asp?cid=610). This was nothing more than a cost cutting move.
