What you state is the primary problem in the industry
The outright theft of Intellectual Property is one of the biggest things out there. The fact that ATI and NVIDIA dont want people to know what they are doing is great for the Justice Dept. to know about so they can go and raid them.

That said aside, in the real world, hardware is used for up to 20 years (or sometimes even more) from the time it is released. In reality, people are not going to buy something new just because it came out. They are fed up with buying something new every year or two. And companies cannot afford it.

Releasing something stable that will run today as well as 20 years from now and being able to update the operating system for that length of time as well is the type of stability that the business sector is looking for.

In the case of businesses, most business related actions still do not require anything beyond a VT52/VT55/VT100/VT125 terminal.

The EU has definitely gotten the gist of this and I applaud their ban on software patents. If the rest of the world followed suit with the software patent ban, then this problem of proprietary and hidden drivers would vanish overnight. The video card specifications used to be published in extreme detail years ago - and everyone published their full details. People were able to fully support their products back then. Not now. Now you have to rely upon the manufacturer. Rather than the manufacturer focusing on the development of new hardware, they are now focusing on the development and hiding of their software. It is such a lose-lose situation, but they just dont get it.

As for the local telco, they are happy to assist you with your request for direct access to their switches by providing a better connection for you. You just have to ask for the right equipment. The general telephone you pick up off the store shelf is just about garbage. If you want something premium, then get something that meets the right specifications.

Quite frankly, if you have a DSL modem, you have a piece of that advanced equipment - and it connects directly to your own private switch at the telco...
