Lack of trust

When you gain a reputation through your old products, your newer products automatically gain that same reputation, whether it's fair or not.

The security of their Windows operating system has nothing to do with the security of Passport, but whether Passport is truly secure or not, it doesn't matter. Because people know the reputation of Windows, and they'll think Microsoft is the last company who should be offering a security service. So really, Passport never had a chance to get off the ground. If Microsoft had improved the security of Windows BEFORE releasing Passport, then maybe things would have been different.

In other words, it just shows to go you, reputation does matter.
