Playing The Game - from walmart to intel what they want
Every company wants to continuously grown and be the provider of all your needs, not just to get at your wallet but to make you a customer for life to ensure the cycle of you getting quality products and to ensure the company has a long life. I worked for every large retailer you can think of: WalMart, Lowes, Sears, Weis; and they all have one thing in common, they sell you a product and the only thing they have to compete with is pricing, and ALL of them are looking for ways to keep track of inventory and move product faster at a lower price so they can beat out the other guy. While Microsoft is trying to stay alive by dominating every area of play they can, and releasing their hottest selling product more often.

Think logically here, if you and a bunch of other companies are strictly retail and you sell identical products at an identical price then your income is limited and you have to do cut-bakcs to stay afloat. Microsoft moved into your home PC, your office PC, web and email servers, your video games, your web searches, your home theater, soon your car stereo and personal mp3 player. So if you think about it, they are rather smart for moving into other areas and not just locking in to the PC arena, and seeing as their operating system division is the biggest money maker for the company its a small wonder why they want to release more often.
