Things are much simpler ...
MS's top echelon are billionaires and the thick layer right below them multi-millionaires.

Given the inhuman effort required to really fix 25+ YEARS of accumulated thick layers of shoddy and crappy code, and the fact that most are filthy rich, I DO NOT think that they care to do anything, but cosmetic changes. Case in point: Vista. They promised a long list of "new" features, they finally deliver ... the icons.

What have the been doing for SIX YEARs? They have notthing to show for this time. Just the XP SP3 wich has to even state that it IS XP so that the apps can continue running....

They are biding for time. Office Beta, IE Beta, everything is BETA. With 20,000 developers and billions in $$$$ and they cannot do anything beyond a BETA here or a DEMO there.

They are not pathetic, they will go down in history as the firm who managed to fool so many people for such a long time, while hoarding billions from the victims....
