Gates may have only appeared smart
In studying Gates we should see that he may have cheated his way through school and software competitions. The fact he did not graduate from Harvard implies something like cheeting stunted his career. It is well known that Bill did have Paul "help" him on the schools PDP computer, which was there to support the DOD during the vietnalm war. Bill, or likely Paul developed Basic and simulated Altar there. Paul was not a student at this time and hence the PDP use technically was theft serious enough to ask Bill to leave.

In the future attention to the reason "smart" men "drop out" will be useful in preventing ENRON style criminals from suceeding.
