The standardisation of Windows XP over such a long time has been a good thing.

For who?

Remember that first intense love affair? (I'm assuming that this isn't /.) Or consider the incredible rush that comes with an addict's first (free) hit of the drug that's about to rule his life. Life is full of "incredible firsts" that aren't reproducible, and fortunately most of us move on instead of trying to recapture it.

Well, Microsoft got an incredible rush out of the people-standing-in-lines blockbuster release of MSWin95 -- and they've been trying to recapture that high ever since. Business logic has nothing to do with it.
