what do you mean, "why even bother"?
Please explain your statement. It seems to imply that because Linux won't be under the "latest and greatest" version of the GPL license, that makes the software a piece of crap? Those are rather flimsy grounds for attacking Linux. Linus has chosen to stay under an earlier version that permits DRM code to be available on Linux, rather than go along with RMS's idealogical attack on DRM. One can argue about whether or not DRM is a good thing, but Linus has chosen to accept that it's here to stay, and to accommodate it. If that means shipping closed source media players, or whatever, so be it.

It would be nice for all information to be free, but I can understand it when owners want to protect their valuable intellectual property. Maybe this will some day lead to most information being "protected" in some manner by DRM, but if that's what copyright owners want to do, it's their right. No one will be able force every copyright owner to restrict access if the owner chooses not to. In the mean time, someone will undoubtedly break DRM and we'll be able to play our legally-purchased songs on any of our own players (as well as people stealing songs with P2P sharing, but that's another issue).
