Well you have a couple of options
DO NOT USE Mandrake! At least none of their new offerings, it will run dog slow.

Now here are some options you can consider:
Slackware - German: http://slackware.com/
|-- Use Black Box or XFCe4 as the WM / Desktop for best performance (Anything newer than KDE 2.2 is to slow.)

Debian - Not sure: http://www.debian.org/
|-- Debian is not bleeding edge technology. They have a reputation of always being behind the rest and herein is their strength and that is all of the packages they provide are tested and stable. They do have more modern offerings as far as kernel and whatnot but that is for the more bold. Also with the apt get package system you can't go wrong.

Libranet - Not Sure: http://www.libranet.com/
| -- Debian based but more modern, easier installer as well.

Bottom line do a search for distrobutions that support the old i386 architecture, read about each one and make a decision based on what you read.
