Is lacking computer literacy the real problem?
The year 2006 marks the 25 anniversary of the PC as we know it. This means that a very large number of computer users have grown up taking a PC as granted as running water or a TV set.
I find it very discomforting to see how IT staff in this day and age still considers their clients as malicious wrongdoers and blundering fools, incapable of taking care of their own working tool.
If lacking computer literacy is the problem, I think this is more detrimental to productivity and should be taken care of rather than further compromising the integrity and privacy of the users.
Yes, I have worked as 'the IT guy' and have found that trusting users breeds responsibility, in opposite to distrust which breeds cheating and ignorance.
Some may argue that PC users should do their work and not have to bother about their PCs.
Well, do you think it's better to have to wait half a day for 'the IT guy' to fix something you could do yourself in five minutes if you had the ability, knowledge and the proper user rights? And then feel good about it afterwards?
My firm belief is that greater computer literacy and more trust put in users will boost productivity and allow encouraging individuals to find new ways of doing things instead of being shut in by restrictions and company policies.
Allowing the users some privacy, as Private Folders promised would be but a small step in this direction.
