Let's see, 6 years ago Windows 2000 had just shipped, and Whistler (to be renamed XP) was under development. At that point, any post-Whistler OSes were conceptual at best.

Development on the original Longhorn didn't start till around 2002 (do a search for Longhorn 3683 and you'll see it's from late 2002).

The OS now known as Vista was started around August 2004 when they did the infamous Longhorn Reset. I'd say that to take Server 2003 SP1 and evolve it to where Vista is today, in just two years, is pretty darn good. It is a shame that so much time was wasted on the original Longhorn, however.
