Workarounds
Your entire message is describing how to make workarounds to fix problems. These problems shouldn't exist at all in the first place, and the attitude you show is excactly the same people adapted in the DDR. "We have to manage, it can't be otherwise, system is as system is".
Using images is just a way of making the wipe-and-reinstall easier. It doesn't adress the real issue: Windows messes up on itself and becomes more and more unstable as time passes.

There are several more stable systems available. I write this on a Linux PC which hasn't failed in 5 years now. Upgraded to newer versions yes, installed fixpacks yes, but no lockups, mysterious reboots or crashes. I managed an IBM mainframe that worked 24x365 for 6 years, then I left and I don't know it's fate. A UNIX box did the same, and I've had an IBM iSeries that was available to users for 5 years. Of course none of them were hit by virus, worms, or any of the Windows badware. Neither IBM nor Sun installed spyware and called it 'Advantage'.
All these system recieved regular fixes, but not anyway near the scale windows needs them. Normally you got one a two a year, and none of them was of the type "If you visit a website, anybody can take control of you installation and clean you out".

I have seen many systems during my 35 years in IT, but I can't recall anything so bad as Windows. Maybe 16-bit OS/2 which was a joint-venture between MS and IBM. With OS/2 Warp, which had ALL Microsoft code removed and rewritten by somebody who knew how, OS/2 became rock stable.
MS will never make it, and they certainly are on a downward slope.
