Except changing for the sake of it is pointless...
...ODF is like the proverbial sideways promotion, on the outside it *seems* like a good thing but, and here's the thing with ODF, it turns out to be no better than what you already had (except now it has cost $x million to adopt).

IMHO the only reason ODF is gaining so much momentum is the perceived threat to MS Office. One only has to look at some of the high-profile companies that are backing it (which happen to be some of MS's largest competitors), factor in the religious hatred from the OSS rabid faithful and this story is complete.

Time to also debunk some of the the bull...

1) "It is not possible to open files from an earlier version."

This is utter nonsense as stated by Brian Jones in his blog:

"..The last time we made a breaking change to the binary formats of today goes back to the start of the Office '97 project (Jan '94 I believe).."

2) "It's an "open" format."

So is plain text, and to an extent so is PDF and MS Office 12 XML.

Ok you get the idea...
